Statewide Education And Policy Leaders Cheer Governor’s Proposed Investment In Calbright and California Students

We are thrilled to share that Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2026-27 State Budget includes a significant $38.1 million increase in ongoing support for Calbright College. This investment comes at a crucial moment for Calbright College and our students, providing the funding necessary to reach and support more of California’s adult learners on their education and career pathways.

“Governor Newsom’s investment in Calbright College students is a powerful recognition of the urgent need to support adult learners and build a more inclusive, future-ready workforce,” said Calbright’s President and CEO Ajita Talwalker Menon.

As we move forward to serve more Californians looking to reskill, upskill, and pivot in their careers, we are honored to share the perspectives of the leaders and partners who see the impact of our work every day.

What They’re Saying:

Dr. Su Jin Jez, CEO, California Competes

“California is home to 6.8 million adults without college degrees, representing an opportunity to expand economic mobility, fill workforce gaps, and strengthen California’s economy and communities. Calbright College’s competency-based, online, and flexible pathways aligned with career-focused preparation, are designed to unlock the potential of this population. The state’s proposed investment in Calbright affirms California’s commitment to modernizing higher education to meet the needs of today’s learners.”

Miles Menetrey, Chair, Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC)

“Funding Calbright College provides value for rural communities, who are often left behind when it comes to economic and workforce development opportunities. RCRC supports increasing the use of distance learning to improve educational opportunities in rural areas and Calbright College offers opportunities to upskill and reskill, expand potential economic opportunities, and deliver a flexible education model and resources for working adults. Given that four rural counties, including my home Mariposa County, are wholly outside of any existing community college district, investment in Calbright is critical if we’re to bring higher education access to these unserved communities. Calbright College can help bridge those gaps and augment the California Community Colleges.”

Eloy Ortiz Oakley, President, College Futures Foundation

“Calbright was created to reimagine what a community college could be for working adults, and this budget marks a pivotal moment in that vision. As the college completes its startup period, this funding allows Calbright to continue to invest in student success, innovation, and economic mobility. It sends a powerful signal that California will continue to lead the way and is serious about helping adults gain the skills they need to thrive in the modern economy — no matter where they live or how busy their lives may be.”

Alysia Bell, President, UNITE-LA

“UNITE-LA applauds Governor Newsom’s continued commitment to expanding workforce pathways through his investment in Calbright College. By offering a unique modality, Calbright serves as a vital complement to our higher education ecosystem. This investment strengthens our shared regional mission to provide diverse, flexible and career-connected training that ensures no student is left behind in the Los Angeles economy.”

Paul Granillo, President and CEO, Inland Empire Economic Partnership

“This funding for Calbright College is a smart economic development investment for California. Employers across the Inland Empire and the state need a skilled, adaptable workforce, and Calbright is designed to deliver exactly that — fast, flexible, and aligned with real labor market demand. By supporting adult learners as they upskill and reskill, the state is strengthening businesses, improving job stability, and expanding economic opportunity in communities that need it most.”
