Position Overview
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) – English as a Second Language (ESL) will collaborate with faculty, deans, and instructional designers to enhance English language learning for students at Calbright College. This position focuses on developing English language competencies, implementing learning pathways, facilitating pilot programs, training ELD tutors, and leading the EL Advisory Group. The SME will work remotely to ensure the successful execution of these initiatives.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The duties below are representative of the role and are not intended to cover all duties performed within the scope of work.
- English Language Competency Development (20%)
- Develop English language competencies necessary for English Language Learners (ELLs) to complete Calbright programs and transition into career pathways.
- Design a Guided Self-Placement (self-assessment tool) for students to evaluate their English language skills.
- Analyze data (onboarding surveys, focus groups, interviews) to refine English Learner personas and improve learning pathways.
- English Learning Platform Adoption & Pilot Implementation (40%)
- Co-lead and facilitate the adoption of English language upskilling online learning platform.
- Identify and tailor the platform’s English learning content to align with Calbright’s programs of study.
- Support and track the progress of 40 students in the pilot program.
- Assess EnGen’s platform, content, and services to determine feasibility for full adoption.
- English Language Learning Pathways Development (15%)
- Develop structured English language learning pathways that include reading, writing, speaking/listening, and overall language competencies from existing language upskilling content providers.
- Design learning objects, workshops and curate Open Educational Resources (OER) to support pathway implementation into Canvas, the current learning management system used by the institution.
- Continuously update learning pathways in LMS based on stakeholder feedback.
- Training and Support for ELD Tutors (15%)
- Develop training programs and resources for English Language Development (ELD) tutors providing English language tutoring in one-on-one and group settings.
- Conduct at least three workshops to train ELD tutors on best practices in English language tutoring and instruction.
- Facilitate English Learner (EL) Advisory Group (10%)
- Chair and lead the EL Advisory Group, ensuring structured quarterly meetings.
- Present data, gather feedback, and outline action items to continuously improve ELD initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of English language acquisition, competency-based education, and assessment tools.
- Experience with digital learning platforms and EdTech solutions.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data to improve learning pathways and competency development.
Strong facilitation and training skills to support ELD tutors and instructional staff. - Excellent communication and leadership skills to manage advisory groups and collaborate with stakeholders.
- Demonstrate understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, staff and faculty.
- Requires the ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related field (preferred).
- Extensive experience in English Language Development (ELD) or English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum development.
- Prior experience developing self-assessment tools, learning pathways, or competency-based education models.
- Familiarity with Open Educational Resources (OER) and digital learning content creation.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience leading large-scale pilot programs or proof of concept initiatives.
- Experience training and mentoring educators or tutors in ESL/ELD instruction.
- Prior work with advisory groups, committees, or similar stakeholder engagement processes.

Working Conditions and Travel
- Calbright College is a statewide online college where all instruction and support are done via various online technologies both in person and remotely. Calbright College has administrative offices in Sacramento available for use. When working remotely, employees should be able and willing to use digital communication tools as used by the college, and have the ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

- Requires the ability to function in a remote online instructional environment performing work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in-person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
